Act of Contrition: Traditional Prayer of Sorrow for Sin
The classic Catholic prayer of repentance, with a personal prayer of amendment
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
The Act of Contrition is prayed in confession and at the end of each day. Say the traditional words slowly, then add the personal prayer that follows to make your resolve concrete.
Let us pray
O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
Lord, I have said these words many times, and I want them to be true today. I am sorry not only because sin has consequences, but because it has hurt You, who have never done anything but love me. Let my sorrow come from love, not just from fear.
I know my particular weaknesses: the temper, the laziness, the pride, the habits I excuse. Give me the grace to name them honestly in confession and to fight them with real effort. When I fall again, let me rise quickly and return to You without delay.
Strengthen my resolve. Let me avoid the places, screens, and conversations that lead me away from You. Fill my heart so fully with Your love that there is no room left for sin.
Jesus, You died so that I could be forgiven. I accept Your mercy and I promise, with Your help, to begin again. Amen.
Blessing
May the Lord who forgives you give you also the grace to walk in newness of life.
