Apostles' Creed: The Profession of Faith with a Prayer of Trust

What Christians have believed from the beginning, prayed as a personal yes

Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026

The Apostles' Creed summarizes the faith handed down from the first disciples. It opens the rosary and is prayed at baptisms. Say it as a declaration, then make it personal with the prayer below.

Let us pray

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; He descended into hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Lord, I have just said I believe, and I want it to be true all the way down. Where my faith is strong, thank You. Where it is thin, strengthen it. Where I believe with my lips but doubt in my heart, meet me there.

I believe You created me, so my life has meaning. I believe Your Son died for me, so my sins are not the end of the story. I believe He rose, so death is not the end either. I believe in the forgiveness of sins, so I can forgive. I believe in life everlasting, so I can hope.

Make these words the ground I stand on, today and when everything else shakes. Amen.

May the faith you profess be the rock beneath your feet in every season.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed?

The Apostles' Creed is shorter and older in form, used in the rosary and at baptism. The Nicene Creed, prayed at Sunday Mass, was written in the fourth century and explains the divinity of Christ in more detail.

What does it mean that Jesus descended into hell?

It refers to the realm of the dead, not the hell of the damned. Christ went to the faithful who had died before Him to bring them the good news of salvation and open heaven to them.
