Psalm 23 Prayer: The Lord Is My Shepherd

The best-loved psalm, prayed in green pastures and in dark valleys

Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026

Psalm 23 is read at bedsides and gravesides because it holds both rest and shadow. Read the psalm, then pray the prayer that follows, letting the Good Shepherd lead you wherever you are today.

Let us pray

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (Psalm 23:1-4, 6, KJV)

Lord Jesus, Good Shepherd, You know my name and You know where I am today. If I am in green pastures, teach me to lie down and rest instead of rushing to the next thing. If I am in the valley of shadow, remind me that You have not left; You are walking it with me.

Restore my soul. It is worn thin by worry and noise. Lead me beside still water, even for five minutes, and let me drink.

Lead me in right paths, Lord. When I want to wander toward what looks greener, use Your staff to pull me back. When I am lost, come find me as You promised You would.

I believe that goodness and mercy are following me, even on the days I cannot see them. And I believe that at the end of this road there is a house with a place set for me. Lead me there, Shepherd, and let me never want for anything but You. Amen.

Blessing

May the Good Shepherd lead you to still waters and bring you safely to His house forever.
