Sunday prayer for the whole of the Lord's Day

From morning bells to Sunday evening: rest, worship, family, and peace

Morning Prayer editorial team ยท Updated: November 2026

Sunday deserves its own prayer, distinct from the busy weekday ones: a prayer for the Lord's Day as a whole, from the morning bells to the quiet of Sunday evening when the week ahead begins to press in. Pray this Sunday prayer after Mass, at the family meal, or as the day winds down.

Let us pray

Lord of the Sabbath, this is Your day, and I give it back to You. You made the world in six days and rested on the seventh, not because You were tired, but to teach me that rest is holy. Today I try to learn.

Thank You for the Mass I have attended or will attend: for the Word proclaimed, for the bread broken, for the people in the pews whose names I do not know but who are my brothers and sisters. Let what happened at the altar spill over into the whole day.

Bless our Sunday table. Let there be an extra place for someone who would otherwise eat alone. Let the conversation be unhurried, the phones be put away, the children be allowed to be children. Give us the kind of afternoon we will remember when we are old.

Give rest to those who cannot rest today: nurses, police officers, cooks, drivers, parents of newborns, everyone who keeps the world running while others sleep in. Reward their labor, and give them a Sabbath of their own somewhere in the week.

As evening comes and the shadow of Monday falls across the room, do not let anxiety steal the last hours of Your day. Remind me that You go into the week ahead of me. Let me end this Sunday with gratitude for what it was, with the Gospel still echoing, and with my family and my soul at peace. Amen.

Blessing

May the peace of the Lord's Day stay with you through this Sunday night and into every day of the week ahead.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Church ask of Catholics on Sunday?

To take part in Mass and to rest from work and activities that hinder worship, joy, and family life. The Catechism describes Sunday as a day for the mind, the body, and relationships to be renewed in God.

How can I deal with Sunday evening anxiety about the week ahead?

Name it to God, as this prayer does. Then do something restful and concrete: a walk, a call to a friend, preparing one thing for Monday so it feels less looming. Ending Sunday with a short prayer of trust hands the week over before it begins.

What if I have to work on Sunday?

Many essential jobs require it, and the Church recognizes this. Attend Mass on Saturday evening or at another Sunday time if you can, keep a moment of prayer in your day, and set aside another day of the week for genuine rest.
