Sunday morning prayer for the Lord's Day
Welcoming the day of rest and preparing the heart for Mass
Morning Prayer editorial team ยท Updated: November 2026
Sunday is the day of the Resurrection, the first day of the week and the Lord's own day. This Sunday morning prayer welcomes the day of rest, prepares your heart for Mass, and asks God's blessing on the week that begins.
Let us pray
Risen Lord Jesus, on this first day of the week the women came to the tomb and found it empty. On this same day You walked with two disciples to Emmaus and broke bread with them. Walk with me this Sunday morning. Let it be a day of meeting You.
Thank You for the gift of rest. For six days I have worked and worried; today You tell me to stop, as You rested on the seventh day of creation. Help me actually to stop: to put down the phone, leave the inbox closed, and remember that the world will keep turning without my pushing it.
Prepare my heart for Mass. I so often arrive distracted, late, thinking about lunch. This morning let me come early, kneel quietly, and listen. Open my ears to Your Word and my heart to Your Body and Blood. Let me go to the altar with reverence and come away changed.
Bless my family on this Sunday. Give us an unhurried meal together, a walk, a conversation that goes deeper than logistics. Draw back to Your table the members of our family who no longer come. Bless the lonely for whom Sunday is the hardest day, and show me who I might call or visit.
As this day of rest ends and a new week begins, let me carry its peace into Monday. Fill me with the joy of Easter, which every Sunday repeats, and let me live the coming days as someone who knows that the tomb is empty. Alleluia. Amen.
Blessing
May this Sunday be for you a small Easter: a day of rest, of worship, and of meeting the risen Lord.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Sunday the Lord's Day?
Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week, and from the very beginning Christians gathered on that day to break bread. Every Sunday is a little Easter, which is why the Church asks us to attend Mass and rest from unnecessary work.
What if I cannot get to Mass this Sunday?
If illness, care for someone, or distance keeps you away, you are not at fault. Pray this prayer, read the Sunday Gospel, make a spiritual communion, and if possible watch a livestreamed Mass. Return to the parish as soon as you are able.
How can I keep Sunday holy with a busy family?
Choose one or two anchors: Mass together, a shared meal without screens, a walk or a visit to grandparents. Protect them week after week. Children remember the rhythm of Sundays long after they forget the details.
