St Gertrude prayer for the souls in purgatory

Offering the Precious Blood of Jesus for the dead and for sinners

Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026

Saint Gertrude the Great (1256–1302), a Benedictine nun and mystic of Helfta in Germany, had a tender love for the souls in purgatory. The short prayer that bears her name offers the Precious Blood of Jesus for the dead and for sinners; here it is, with a longer prayer to pray alongside it.

Let us pray

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen.

Lord Jesus, at this very moment Your sacrifice is being offered on altars across the world, in cathedrals and chapels, in prisons and hospital wards. I cannot be at all those Masses, but I can unite my heart to them. Take the merits of Your Passion, which are infinite, and apply them to the souls who are being purified and long to see Your face.

Remember especially the ones I have loved and lost: (name them). Remember those no one prays for anymore, whose names have been forgotten on earth but never in heaven. Remember the souls who died suddenly, without time to prepare, and those who died alone.

Saint Gertrude, you loved these souls and prayed for them tirelessly. Teach me the same tenderness. Let me never forget that the Church is one family, living and dead, and that my small prayers can reach beyond the grave.

Give me also, Lord, the grace to live so that my own purification may be short, and to help the living turn to You while there is still time. May the holy souls, once they are with You, pray for me in return. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Amen.

Blessing

May the holy souls you pray for be welcomed into the light of God, and may they remember you before Him in return.

Frequently asked questions

Who was Saint Gertrude the Great?

Gertrude of Helfta was a thirteenth-century German Benedictine nun, theologian, and mystic, the only woman saint called the Great. Her writings describe her deep devotion to the Sacred Heart and her prayers for the dead. Her feast is November 16.

Does this prayer really release a thousand souls from purgatory?

The claim that Jesus promised to release a thousand souls each time it is prayed is a pious tradition, not a teaching of the Church. What the Church does teach is that our prayers and the Mass truly help the dead. Pray it with trust and leave the arithmetic to God.

When is a good time to pray it?

After Holy Communion, at the end of the Rosary, when passing a cemetery, and especially throughout November, the month of the holy souls. Many people pray it every day as a brief act of love for the dead.
