Holy Rosary prayer for Thursday: the Luminous Mysteries
Meditations and intentions for the five mysteries of light
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
On Thursdays the Church prays the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, the five mysteries of Jesus' public ministry introduced by Pope John Paul II in 2002. Here is a short meditation and intention for each mystery, with an opening and closing prayer for your Thursday Rosary.
Let us pray
Lord Jesus, light of the world, on this Thursday I take up my beads to walk with You through the years of Your public life. Let the mysteries of light shine into the dark corners of my own life. Mary, Mother of the Rosary, pray with me.
First mystery: the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. The heavens open and the Father says: this is My beloved Son. I ask for the grace to hear those words over my own life and to live as a child of God.
Second mystery: the Wedding at Cana. Mary notices the wine has run out and tells Jesus; He turns water into wine. I ask for the grace to bring my family's needs to Mary, and for every marriage I know.
Third mystery: the Proclamation of the Kingdom. Jesus calls sinners to repentance and heals the sick. I ask for the grace of conversion, for myself and for those who have left the faith.
Fourth mystery: the Transfiguration. On the mountain His face shines like the sun. I ask for the grace to see Christ's glory even in suffering, and for courage to come down the mountain and serve.
Fifth mystery: the Institution of the Eucharist. On Thursday night He takes bread and says: this is My Body. I ask for the grace to love the Mass, to receive Him worthily, and to pray for priests.
Closing prayer: Jesus, light of the world, I have walked these five mysteries with Your Mother. Let the light I have seen in them go with me into the rest of this Thursday and into the night. Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, pray for us. Amen.
Blessing
May the light of Christ, contemplated in His mysteries today, guide your steps through this Thursday and beyond.
How to pray this prayer

Frequently asked questions
Why are the Luminous Mysteries prayed on Thursday?
When Pope John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries in 2002, he suggested Thursday for them, fittingly, since the fifth mystery, the Institution of the Eucharist, took place on Holy Thursday. The Joyful Mysteries, formerly prayed on Thursday, moved to Saturday.
Which mysteries are prayed on the other days?
Joyful on Monday and Saturday, Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, Glorious on Wednesday and Sunday, Luminous on Thursday. This is a recommendation, not a rule; you may pray any set on any day.
How long does a Thursday Rosary take?
About fifteen to twenty minutes for five decades, prayed at an unhurried pace with a brief pause for each meditation. Praying it while walking or commuting is perfectly acceptable.
