Memorare: Prayer to the Virgin Mary in Urgent Need
Saint Bernard's bold prayer, for when you have nowhere else to turn
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
The Memorare is famous for its confidence: it reminds Mary that no one who has asked her help has been left unaided. Pray it in an emergency, in a long trial, or whenever you need a mother's help.
Let us pray
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Mary, I am coming to you the way a child runs to its mother when something has gone badly wrong. I am not coming because I have earned your help. I am coming because you have never refused anyone, and I am trusting that you will not start with me.
You know what I am carrying today. You know the need I cannot fix, the person I cannot reach, the fear I cannot shake. I lay it at your feet. Take it to your Son. He listened to you at Cana when the wine ran out; I believe He listens to you still.
I do not know how this will be answered. I only know that I will not be left unaided, because you have promised. Hold my hand until the answer comes, and whatever it is, help me to see Jesus in it. Amen.
Blessing
May Mary, who has never left anyone unaided, carry your need to her Son and bring you His peace.
