Saturday morning prayer for rest and Mary's day

Thanks for the week, a blessing on chores and leisure, and the day entrusted to Our Lady

Morning Prayer editorial team ยท Updated: November 2026

Saturday is traditionally Mary's day in the Church, a day of rest after the week and of quiet preparation for Sunday. This Saturday morning prayer gives thanks for the week behind you, asks a blessing on the chores and leisure ahead, and entrusts the day to Our Lady.

Let us pray

Lord, thank You for Saturday. The alarm did not ring, or rang later; the week's work is done, or at least paused. I breathe out and remember that I am more than what I produce.

Thank You for the week that has ended. For the tasks finished and the ones that will wait until Monday. For the people who helped me and the ones who tested me. For the meals, the conversations, the small mercies I was too busy to notice. I lay the whole week at Your feet, the good and the bad, and leave it there.

Bless this Saturday. Bless the laundry and the lawn, the groceries and the repairs, the children's games and the long breakfast. Let me do the ordinary things with a glad heart and not as a second job. Give me time for someone I have been neglecting: a friend, a parent, my spouse, You.

If I am working today, give me strength and a fair reward. If I am resting, let my rest be real: not scrolling, not numbing, but the kind of rest that makes me more alive. Help me prepare for tomorrow, Your day, so that I arrive at Mass unhurried.

Mary, this is your day. You spent so many Saturdays in Nazareth doing exactly these things: water, bread, mending, prayer. Teach me to find God in the small tasks, and keep my family in your heart today. Amen.

Blessing

May your Saturday be restful and full of small joys, and may Mary, whose day it is, keep you close to her Son.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Saturday called Mary's day?

Since the early Middle Ages the Church has dedicated Saturday to the Blessed Virgin, recalling her faith on Holy Saturday, when she alone kept hope between the cross and the Resurrection. Many Catholics pray the Rosary or the Litany of Loreto on Saturdays.

Is Saturday a religious day of rest for Catholics?

No. Sunday is the Christian day of rest and worship. But Saturday is a good day to slow down, finish practical tasks, and prepare the heart and the household so that Sunday can truly be kept holy.

How can I prepare for Sunday on Saturday?

Read the Sunday Gospel ahead of time, go to Confession if your parish offers it on Saturday afternoon, lay out clothes, plan the meal, and set a quiet intention for Mass. A little preparation turns Sunday from a rush into a feast.
