Guardian Angel Prayer: Angel of God, My Guardian Dear
The traditional children's prayer, with a grown-up petition for guidance and protection
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
Jesus spoke of angels who watch over little ones, and the Church teaches that each of us has a guardian. Pray the traditional words, then speak to your own angel as the companion he has been all along.
Let us pray
Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
Holy angel, you have been with me since before I could speak. You were there in the moments I remember and the thousands I have forgotten. You have kept me from dangers I never knew existed. Thank you.
Be at my side today in a special way. Light my path when I cannot see which way to go. Guard me from harm to body and soul, especially from the harm I would do to myself through carelessness or sin. Rule my unruly thoughts and steer them back to God. Guide me when I am about to speak too quickly or decide too rashly.
When I am tempted, stand between me and the temptation. When I am afraid, remind me that I am not alone. When I pray poorly, carry my clumsy words before the throne of God and make them beautiful.
Watch over the people I love, and work alongside their own angels to keep them safe. Guard the ones who do not believe in you; love them anyway, as God does.
And at the end of my life, dear angel, do not leave me. Lead me through the door I am afraid of and present me to the Lord who gave me to your care. Amen.
Blessing
May your guardian angel light, guard, rule, and guide you this day and every day.

Frequently asked questions
Does everyone have a guardian angel?
The Catholic Church teaches that every person has an angel assigned by God to protect and guide them throughout life, drawing on Jesus' words in Matthew 18:10 and Psalm 91.
Can I name my guardian angel?
The Church discourages inventing names for angels, since Scripture names only Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. You can simply address your angel as my guardian or holy angel.
