St Bridget 12 year prayer on the Passion of Christ
A daily prayer honoring the wounds and sufferings of Jesus in the spirit of Saint Bridget

Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303–1373), a mother of eight, a widow, and a mystic, left a tradition of prayers on the Passion of Christ: the fifteen prayers said daily for a year and the seven prayers said daily for twelve years, each honoring the wounds and sufferings of Jesus. The Church permits these devotions but does not vouch for the promises attached to them. Here is an original daily prayer on the Passion in Saint Bridget's spirit.
Let us pray
Lord Jesus Christ, with Saint Bridget I kneel before Your cross and look at what my salvation cost. I do not come to earn anything by counting prayers or years; I come because love wants to look at the Beloved, and You are wounded for me.
I adore the drops of blood You shed in the garden, when fear pressed You to the ground and You still said yes to the Father. Give me that yes when I am afraid.
I adore the blows of the scourging, which tore Your back, and the crown of thorns pressed onto Your head. Heal in me the wounds I have received from others, and forgive the wounds I have given.
I adore the weight of the cross on Your shoulder and the road to Calvary. Walk with everyone I know who is carrying something heavy today: the sick, the grieving, the exhausted.
I adore the nails in Your hands and feet, and Your arms stretched wide to receive the whole world. Stretch my heart wider than it wants to go.
I adore Your pierced side, from which blood and water flowed, the birth of the Church and of my own Baptism. Wash me again.
I adore Your last breath and the words: into Your hands I commend My spirit. When my hour comes, let these be my words too.
Saint Bridget, who returned to these mysteries every day of your life, teach me faithfulness. Keep me at the foot of the cross with Mary, and let the Passion of Jesus become the measure of my love. Amen.
Blessing
May the Passion of Christ, contemplated day after day, soften your heart and deepen your love for the One who gave everything.

Frequently asked questions
Who was Saint Bridget of Sweden?
Birgitta Birgersdotter (1303–1373) was a Swedish noblewoman, wife, and mother of eight who, after her husband's death, founded the Bridgettine order and spent her last years in Rome. She received many visions of Christ's Passion. Her feast is July 23, and she is a co-patroness of Europe.
What are the twelve-year prayers of St Bridget?
Tradition holds that Saint Bridget received seven prayers honoring the Precious Blood, to be said daily for twelve years, and fifteen prayers on the Passion, to be said daily for a year. Various promises were later attached to them. The Church allows the prayers for private devotion but has stated that the promises are not authenticated.
What if I miss a day during the twelve years?
Simply continue the next day. Devotions like this are meant to keep us close to the Passion of Christ, not to bind us with anxiety. God counts love, not days.
