How to Pray the Rosary: A Step-by-Step Guide and Prayer
The structure of the rosary, the mysteries, and a prayer to begin
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
The rosary is a meditation on the life of Jesus through the eyes of Mary, prayed on a string of beads. Here is how it works, followed by a prayer to begin your first or your thousandth rosary.
Let us pray
Hold the crucifix and make the Sign of the Cross. Pray the Apostles' Creed. On the first large bead, pray the Our Father. On the three small beads, pray three Hail Marys for faith, hope, and love. Then pray the Glory Be.
Announce the first mystery and pray an Our Father on the large bead. On the ten small beads, pray ten Hail Marys while thinking about the mystery. Finish the decade with a Glory Be. Repeat for all five mysteries. Close with the Hail Holy Queen and the Sign of the Cross.
The Joyful Mysteries (Monday and Saturday) recall the Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, and Finding in the Temple. The Sorrowful Mysteries (Tuesday and Friday) recall the Agony in the Garden, Scourging, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, and Crucifixion. The Glorious Mysteries (Wednesday and Sunday) recall the Resurrection, Ascension, Descent of the Holy Spirit, Assumption, and Coronation of Mary. The Luminous Mysteries (Thursday) recall the Baptism of Jesus, Wedding at Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, Transfiguration, and Institution of the Eucharist.
Mary, I take up these beads as a child takes a mother's hand. I do not know how to pray well, but I know how to repeat your name and your Son's. Walk with me through His life. Show me the stable, the cross, and the empty tomb through your eyes. Let the words become quiet, and let Jesus become clear. Amen.
Blessing
May the mysteries of Christ's life, prayed with Mary, draw you closer to Him with every bead.
How to pray this prayer

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to pray the rosary?
A full five-decade rosary takes about fifteen to twenty minutes. If you have less time, pray one decade with real attention. The Church encourages praying what you can rather than nothing.
Do I need rosary beads to pray the rosary?
No. Beads help you keep count, but you can use your fingers or a rosary app. The prayer is the meditation, not the object.
What if my mind wanders during the rosary?
Everyone's does. When you notice, gently return to the mystery. The repetition is designed to quiet the mind over time; distraction is not failure.
