Reflection

Verse of the Day – John 10:11: The Shepherd Who Gives Himself

Today the Church remembers Saint Charles Borromeo, Archbishop of Milan in the sixteenth century, who is remembered for renewing the Church after the Council of Trent and for staying close to his people during a time of plague. His life echoes these words of Jesus. A shepherd does not watch from a safe distance; he stays, he walks ahead, and he spends himself for those entrusted to him.

Jesus does not merely describe good leadership here. He tells you who he is for you. Before you have done anything today, before you have succeeded or failed at anything, he has already chosen to lay down his life for you. You are not a burden he tolerates but one of the sheep he knows by name. Let that settle in as you begin your tasks, answer messages, and meet the people waiting for you.

In this month of November, when we pray for the faithful departed, this verse is also a quiet comfort: the Shepherd who gave his life does not lose those he loves. And on this Wednesday, traditionally dedicated to Saint Joseph, think of the people you are asked to care for. Where can you give a little of yourself today, patiently and without fanfare, as Joseph did?

A short prayer with this verse

Lord Jesus, Good Shepherd, you laid down your life for me and you know me by name. Teach me to rest in your care today. Through the prayers of Saint Charles Borromeo, give our bishops and priests courage and tenderness, and make me generous toward those you place in my path. Gather into your eternal fold all the faithful departed, especially those I carry in my heart. Saint Joseph, faithful guardian, pray for us. Amen.
