“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”
— Matthew 11:28-29 (KJV)
Reflection
Today is the First Friday of November, a day the Church has long kept close to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. In this verse, Jesus describes his own heart. He calls it meek and lowly. It is not a guarded heart or an impatient one, but a heart that makes room. Whatever you are carrying this morning, whether unfinished work, a worry about someone you love, or a tiredness that sleep has not fixed, he does not ask you to sort it out before you come. He simply says: come.
Friday is also a day of penance, when we remember the Passion. It may seem strange to speak of rest on such a day, yet the cross is where Jesus took up the heaviest yoke of all, so that ours might become bearable. A small act of self-denial today can be a way of walking beside him, not a burden laid on top of your others.
November invites us, too, to pray for the faithful departed. Bring to this verse the names of those you miss. The rest Jesus promises is for them as well. Ask that they may find in his heart the peace that lasts, and let your own grief be held there gently.
A short prayer with this verse
Lord Jesus, meek and lowly of heart, I come to you as I am this Friday, with what tires me and what I cannot fix. Teach me to take up your yoke and to learn from your patience. Let the small sacrifices of this day unite me to your Passion. Remember, too, all who have died, especially those I love; grant them rest in your mercy and light in your presence. Make my heart more like yours. Amen.
