Night Prayer Before Bed for Rest and Protection

Handing your sleep, your fears, and your loved ones to God for the night

Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026

This is the last prayer of the day, meant to be said with the lights low. If you struggle to fall asleep, pray it slowly and let each line loosen the grip of the day.

Let us pray

Father in heaven, the house is quiet now and I am ready to rest. I lie down under Your gaze, knowing that You neither slumber nor sleep, and that nothing can happen tonight that is beyond Your care.

Take from me the weight of today. The things I said that I wish I could take back, the things I left undone, the conversation that is still replaying in my head: I give them all to You. You are big enough to hold them, and I am too tired to carry them any longer.

Quiet my racing thoughts. Where fear whispers, let Your voice be louder. Where I am tempted to plan tomorrow in the dark, remind me that You already stand in tomorrow waiting for me.

Station Your angels around this home. Keep every door and every heart within it safe. Bless the people I love, near and far, and give them the same peace I ask for myself.

If I wake in the night, let my first thought be of You. If I dream, let my dreams be gentle. If this night should be my last, receive me in Your mercy.

Lord Jesus, You slept in a boat during a storm because You trusted the Father completely. Give me that same trust tonight. Into Your hands I place my body, my mind, and my soul. Amen.

Blessing

Sleep in peace, for the Lord who watches over you does not sleep.

Frequently asked questions

Can night prayer help with insomnia?

Prayer is not a sleep technique, but many people find that handing their worries to God quiets the mind. If sleeplessness persists, please also talk to a doctor; faith and good care go together.

What if I fall asleep in the middle of the prayer?

Then the prayer has done its work. Falling asleep while talking to God is like a child falling asleep in a parent's arms. He hears what you meant to say.
