Evening Prayer to Close the Day in Peace
Thanksgiving, examination of the day, and trust before the night

As the light fades, look back over the day with God. Name what was good, admit what went wrong, and let it all rest in His hands before you sleep.
Let us pray
Lord, the day is ending and I come to You tired. Thank You for carrying me through it. Thank You for the food I ate, the work I was able to do, the people who were kind to me, and the moments of beauty I almost missed.
As I look back over these hours, show me where You were present. Show me the moment I felt Your peace, the conversation that was more than chance, the small grace that kept me going. I thank You for each one.
Show me also where I turned away from You. For the impatient word, the selfish choice, the prayer I rushed, and the help I did not give, I am sorry. Forgive me, Lord, and help me to begin again tomorrow with a clean heart.
I bring to You the people I love. Watch over the ones who are sleeping and the ones who cannot sleep. Comfort anyone who is grieving tonight, heal anyone who is sick, and be near anyone who is alone.
Now I let go of what I could not finish. Tomorrow has not yet arrived, and it belongs to You, not to my worries. Keep me safe through the night, body and soul, and let me wake with gratitude.
Into Your hands, Lord, I commend my spirit. Amen.

May the Lord grant you a quiet night and a peaceful end, and may you rise renewed in His love.

Frequently asked questions
What is an examination of the day?
It is a short review of the past hours in God's presence: noticing where He was at work, giving thanks, and honestly naming any failures. This evening prayer includes a simple version of it.
Should I pray evening prayer before or after I get into bed?
Either works. Many people find it easier to stay attentive while sitting in a chair before bed. If you fall asleep while praying, that is a rather peaceful way to end the day.
