Our Lady of Perpetual Help novena prayer

Nine days of prayer to the Mother whose help never runs out

Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026

The icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, entrusted to the Redemptorists in 1866, shows Mary holding the Child Jesus as He glimpses the instruments of His Passion. Her novena is prayed in thousands of parishes every Wednesday and over nine consecutive days before her feast on June 27. Here is an original novena prayer with an intention for each day.

Let us pray

Mother of Perpetual Help, in your icon the Child Jesus clings to your hand, frightened by the vision of the cross, and you look not at Him but at us, as if to say: bring me your fears too. I bring them now, over these nine days.

You are called Perpetual Help because your help does not run out, does not tire, does not depend on my deserving it. Help me, then, with the need I carry: (name your intention). Present it to your Son, as you presented the empty wine jars at Cana, and trust Him to do what is best.

Help me also to become the kind of person who helps others. Let me notice the neighbor who is struggling, the child who is anxious, the elderly parent who is lonely. Let my hands, like yours, be hands that hold.

Day 1: For the grace to trust Mary's help with my intention.
Day 2: For my family, that it may be a place of peace.
Day 3: For the sick and all who are afraid of what is coming.
Day 4: For those who have lost their faith or their way.
Day 5: For work, provision, and freedom from financial worry.
Day 6: For the conversion of my own heart and a good confession.
Day 7: For the souls of the departed, especially those I miss.
Day 8: For the Church, priests, and all who serve the poor.
Day 9: In thanksgiving, whatever the outcome, for a Mother who never lets go.

Mother of Perpetual Help, pray for us who have recourse to you, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Frequently asked questions

What does the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help show?

A Byzantine-style image of Mary holding the Child Jesus, who has just seen the archangels Michael and Gabriel carrying the cross, lance, and sponge. One of His sandals hangs loose, a sign that He ran to His Mother in fear. Mary looks out at us, inviting us to come to her too.

Why is the novena prayed on Wednesdays?

The Redemptorists began a weekly perpetual novena on Wednesdays in the 1920s, and the custom spread worldwide, most famously to the Baclaran shrine in Manila, where huge crowds still gather each Wednesday.

When does the nine-day novena end?

The feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help is June 27, so the solemn novena runs from June 18 to 26. You may also pray it at any time of year for a particular need.
