Thursday morning prayer in the spirit of the Last Supper

Thanksgiving for the Eucharist, prayer for priests, and strength to finish the week

Morning Prayer editorial team ยท Updated: November 2026

Thursday is the day of the Last Supper, when Jesus gave us the Eucharist and the priesthood, and it is the day the Church prays the Luminous Mysteries. This Thursday morning prayer gives thanks for the Eucharist, prays for priests, and asks for strength as the week nears its end.

Let us pray

Lord Jesus, on a Thursday evening You sat at table with Your friends, took bread, and said: this is My Body, given for you. Every Thursday morning since then has carried a little of that upper room. Let this one carry it too.

Thank You for the Eucharist, the gift I receive so often that I forget to be astonished. Thank You for every Mass I have ever attended, from my First Communion to last Sunday. Give me a hunger for You that the week's busyness cannot dull.

I pray today for priests, because on that Thursday You gave us them too. Bless the priest who baptized me, the one who hears my confessions, the one who will one day anoint me. Strengthen those who are tired, lonely, or tempted. Call young men to follow You, and give them the courage to answer.

The week is nearly over, and my energy is low. Give me the stamina to finish well: to do today's work with care, to be kind when I am tired, and to resist the temptation to coast toward Friday. Let my fatigue be an offering, joined to Your long night in Gethsemane that followed the Supper.

Bless my family and everyone I will meet today. Let me serve them as You served the apostles when You knelt to wash their feet. Mary, who taught Jesus to break bread at Nazareth, pray for me this Thursday. Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord who gave Himself to you in the Eucharist strengthen you this Thursday and carry you toward the weekend in peace.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Thursday connected to the Eucharist and priests?

Jesus instituted the Eucharist and the priesthood at the Last Supper on Holy Thursday. Many parishes keep a Thursday Holy Hour of adoration and pray especially for priests and vocations on that day.

Which Rosary mysteries are prayed on Thursday?

The Luminous Mysteries: the Baptism of Jesus, the Wedding at Cana, the Proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration, and the Institution of the Eucharist. The last fits Thursday perfectly.

How can I pray for priests in a practical way?

Name one priest each Thursday and pray for him specifically. Offer a small sacrifice for him, send a note of thanks, and remember the priests of your past, living and dead. Priests often say they can feel the difference these prayers make.
