Prayer of Gratitude for the Gifts of This Day
A short, specific thank-you to God for the ordinary good things

Gratitude grows when it gets specific. This prayer of gratitude leaves room for you to name the actual gifts of today, however small, and to see God's generosity in each one.
Let us pray
Lord, I pause right now to say thank You.
Thank You for this day, not an ideal day but this real one, with its weather and its traffic and its small surprises. Thank You for the meal that filled me, the cup of coffee or tea that warmed my hands, the chair that held me when I needed to sit down.
Thank You for a face that smiled at me today. Thank You for the message from someone who was thinking of me. Thank You for the task I finished and the one I did not, because tomorrow is also a gift.
Thank You for my body, which carried me through the day without my having to ask it. Thank You for my senses: for the color of the sky this evening, for music, for the smell of bread, for the touch of someone I love.
Thank You for the things I complained about, because they mean I have a home to clean, work to do, people who need me. Help me to see them as gifts.
Thank You for Your patience with me. I was not perfect today, and You loved me anyway.
I want to live as a grateful person, Lord. Open my eyes wider tomorrow. Let me catch more of Your gifts as they fall, and let me pass them on to others with the same open hands with which You give them to me. Amen.
Blessing
May every ordinary gift of today remind you of the extraordinary love of the One who gave it.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a prayer of gratitude and a thanksgiving prayer?
They are close cousins. A thanksgiving prayer often looks at the big picture of God's blessings, while a prayer of gratitude tends to be specific and daily, naming the concrete gifts of one day.
Can gratitude help when I am going through a hard time?
Yes, as long as it is honest. Gratitude does not deny pain; it notices that even in hard seasons God still gives good things. Many people find it steadies them when little else does.
