Prayer for protection against evil: putting on God's armor
Asks God for strength to resist evil in temptation, deceit and fear, and to stand firm in faith each day
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
Evil does not always arrive as something dramatic; often it comes as a small temptation, a convenient lie or a fear that pulls us away from God. Pray this before a hard day, a difficult conversation or whenever you feel your resolve weakening, asking the Lord to clothe you in his strength.
Let us pray
Lord God, Father of all that is good, you taught us through your Son to ask each day that you deliver us from evil. I come to you now, aware of how easily I am drawn toward what harms me and others. Stand beside me and be my refuge.
Clothe me, I pray, in the armor your apostle described: fasten truth around me so I do not slide into half-truths and excuses; cover my heart with your justice; set my feet on the way of peace. Give me faith as a shield when doubt and discouragement come against me, and let your Word be the sword I take into every struggle.
Jesus, you faced the tempter in the desert and did not bend. When I am tempted to anger, to gossip, to dishonesty or to despair, remind me who I am: a child of the Father, redeemed at a great price. Help me recognize evil when it disguises itself as something reasonable or pleasant, and give me the courage to say no.
Holy Spirit, keep watch over my thoughts, my words and the places I go today. Guard my home and those I love from every form of violence, deceit and fear. Where evil has already wounded me, bring healing; where I have given it room, grant me true repentance and the grace of confession.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, and Saint Michael the Archangel, pray for me, that I may remain faithful to the end. I place myself entirely in your hands, Lord, trusting not in my own strength but in your victory over sin and death. Amen.
Blessing
May the Lord be your shield and your strength today, and may his peace guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 'armor of God' mentioned in this prayer?
It refers to Saint Paul's image in his Letter to the Ephesians of truth, justice, peace, faith, salvation and the Word of God as spiritual armor that helps Christians stand firm against evil.
When should I pray for protection against evil?
Any time, but it is especially helpful in the morning, before situations where you expect temptation or conflict, and alongside the sacraments of Confession and the Eucharist, which are the Church's surest help against sin.
Is this prayer a substitute for help from a priest?
No. If you are troubled by persistent fear or a sense of spiritual oppression, speak with your parish priest, who can offer guidance, the sacraments and pastoral care.
