Thanksgiving prayer for family at the holiday table
Gratitude for every generation, for those absent, and for a year lived together

Whether it is Thanksgiving Day with the whole clan around the table or an ordinary Tuesday when you suddenly realize how blessed you are, gratitude for family deserves words. This thanksgiving prayer for family can be prayed before a holiday meal or quietly in your own heart.
Let us pray
Father of every family, we stop before this meal to say what we do not say often enough: thank You. Thank You for the people at this table and for the love, imperfect and stubborn, that holds us together.
Thank You for the grandparents, whose faith and work built the house we live in, and for the stories they still tell. Thank You for the parents, tired and trying. Thank You for the children, loud and alive and full of questions. Thank You for the aunts and uncles and cousins, for the in-laws who became family, for the friend who has no other table and belongs at ours.
Thank You for the ones who are not here: for those far away, whom we miss, and for those who have died, whose places we still feel. We believe they are at Your table now. Let them know they are remembered.
Thank You for this year, Lord. For the good news we celebrated and the hard news we carried together. For the illness that passed, the job that came, the baby who was born, the argument that ended in forgiveness. You were in all of it.
Forgive us for the times we took each other for granted, for the grudges we have nursed, for the calls we did not make. Make this meal a new beginning. Let us leave this table more patient with each other than when we sat down.
Bless this food, bless these hands, bless this family. And teach us to give thanks not only today but every day, because every day You give us one another. Amen.

May God bless your family with gratitude, forgiveness, and joy, today and at every table you share.

Frequently asked questions
Who should lead the Thanksgiving prayer?
Traditionally the host or the eldest family member, but it is lovely to invite a child or a guest. Some families go around the table and let each person name one thing they are thankful for before the Amen.
How can we include children in the family thanksgiving prayer?
Ask each child to say one thank-you in their own words before or after the prayer. Keep the printed prayer in front of an older child to read a paragraph. Children who help lead the prayer remember the day differently.
What if our family gatherings are tense?
Pray this prayer anyway, perhaps shortened, and let the line about forgiveness do its quiet work. A moment of shared gratitude at the start of a meal can lower the temperature of the whole day. Pray beforehand for patience, and for the person you find hardest.
