Thanksgiving Prayer for God's Blessings
Giving thanks for the gifts we notice and the ones we overlook
Morning Prayer editorial team ยท Updated: November 2026
Only one of the ten lepers came back to thank Jesus. This prayer is your way of being that one. Pray it on Thanksgiving Day, on an ordinary Tuesday, or whenever your heart is full.
Let us pray
Gracious God, I come to You today with nothing to ask and everything to thank You for.
Thank You for life itself: for this heartbeat, these lungs, this mind that can know You. Thank You for waking me this morning when I did nothing to deserve another day.
Thank You for the people You have placed around me. For family who know my faults and love me anyway. For friends who show up. For the strangers whose small kindnesses I have already forgotten but You have not.
Thank You for the gifts I rarely notice: clean water, a roof, food on the table, a bed to return to. Thank You for the work that gives shape to my days and the rest that renews me.
Thank You for the hard things, too. For the trials that taught me to depend on You. For the prayers You answered with no, because You saw what I could not. For the sorrows that made me tender toward others.
Above all, thank You for Jesus. For the manger and the cross and the empty tomb. For forgiveness I did not earn and a hope that cannot be taken away. Thank You for the Eucharist, where Your gift becomes bread I can hold.
Make me a grateful person, Lord. Let thanksgiving be my first response and not my afterthought. Let me see Your hand in everything, and let my whole life say thank You. Amen.
Blessing
May a grateful heart be your daily companion, and may you see God's goodness in every ordinary gift.

Frequently asked questions
Why is thanksgiving important in prayer?
Gratitude shifts our attention from what we lack to what God has given. Scripture repeatedly commands it, and the word Eucharist itself means thanksgiving. It is at the center of Christian worship.
How can I build a habit of thanksgiving prayer?
Name three specific things each evening you are grateful for, or keep a simple list. Specific thanks, for a conversation or a meal, trains the eye to notice God's gifts.
