Prayer for Healing and Strength During Illness
For the long road of recovery, when the body is weak and the spirit is tired
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
Healing is rarely instant. For the days when treatment drags on and the mirror shows how tired you are, this prayer asks for two things at once: healing, and the strength to wait for it.
Let us pray
God of all mercy, I am worn down. Illness has taken more from me than I expected: my energy, my plans, some of my confidence, and on hard days even my hope. I bring all of that to You now, because I have nowhere else to bring it.
I ask You for healing. Rebuild what has been damaged. Strengthen what has grown weak. Let the medicine do its work and let my body remember how to be well.
And I ask You for strength while I wait. Strength to get out of bed on the mornings I would rather not. Strength to be gracious to the people who are caring for me, even when I am frustrated. Strength to face another test, another appointment, another night of not knowing.
Lord, You know what it is to be weak. You fell under the weight of the cross and needed another man's help to carry it. Help me now. Send people to walk beside me, and give me the humility to let them.
When I cannot pray with words, let my breathing be a prayer. When I cannot feel Your presence, let me trust it anyway.
I believe that You are working, even on the days when I see no progress. I believe that this suffering is not the end of my story. Heal me, Lord, and until You do, hold me up. Amen.
Blessing
May the Lord who raises the fallen give you strength for today and healing in His time.

Frequently asked questions
How is this different from a general prayer for healing?
This prayer focuses on endurance. It is written for people in long treatment or chronic illness who need daily strength just as much as they need a cure.
Can caregivers pray this prayer too?
Yes. Caregivers also need healing and strength. Pray it for the person you care for, and then pray it again for yourself; both prayers matter to God.
