Prayer for Surgery: Peace Before the Operation and Grace After

For the patient, the surgeon's hands, and the family in the waiting room

Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026

The night before surgery is often harder than the surgery itself. Pray this as you wait, and let the people who love you pray it with you.

Let us pray

Lord Jesus, tomorrow I will be placed in the hands of doctors, and I am afraid. I bring that fear to You honestly, because You already know it and You do not think less of me for it.

Be with me as I am prepared. Be with me as the anesthesia takes hold and I lose awareness of everything except, I pray, Your presence. Hold me while I cannot hold on to anything.

Guide the surgeon's hands. Give the whole team steadiness, focus, and skill. Let nothing be overlooked and let everything go as planned. If something unexpected arises, give them the wisdom to respond well.

Protect my body. Keep me safe from complications and infection. Let me wake up clear-headed and let the healing begin at once.

Comfort my family in the waiting room. Those hours are long for them. Give them peace, good news, and the company of each other.

Lord, I want to be well so that I can serve You and love the people You have given me. But whatever happens, I trust You. You have never abandoned me and You will not begin now.

Mary, Mother of the sick, stay by my bed. Saint Luke, physician and evangelist, pray for those who will care for me.

Jesus, into Your hands I place my body and my life. Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord guide every hand that cares for you, keep you safe through the operation, and bring you swiftly to recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Can I receive the Anointing of the Sick before surgery?

Yes. Catholics facing serious surgery are encouraged to receive this sacrament. Ask your parish priest or the hospital chaplain; it brings strength, peace, and the forgiveness of sins.

How can family members pray during the surgery?

Pray this prayer together in the waiting room, pray a rosary, or simply repeat the name of Jesus. Some families take turns praying so that someone is always interceding.
