Prayer for the Sick and Those Who Care for Them
Interceding for the ill in hospitals, homes, and hospices everywhere
Morning Prayer editorial team · Updated: November 2026
Visiting the sick is one of the works of mercy, and praying for them is a visit of the heart. Use this prayer for one person by name or for all who are suffering tonight.
Let us pray
Compassionate God, I lift up to You all who are sick: those in hospital beds under bright lights, those at home in a quiet room, those in hospice waiting for You, and those who look healthy but carry an illness no one can see.
I pray especially for the ones You have placed in my heart today. You know their names. Be close to them in their pain. When the night is long, be their companion. When the news is hard, be their peace. When they cannot pray, let my prayer stand in for theirs.
I pray for the doctors, nurses, aides, and chaplains who care for them. Steady their hands, sharpen their minds, and keep their hearts tender even after years of hard shifts. Bless the family members who sit in waiting rooms and learn medical words they never wanted to know.
Lord Jesus, You said that whatever we do for the sick, we do for You. Make me generous with my time, faithful in visiting, and honest in my prayers. Do not let me forget the people whose illness has gone on so long that others have stopped asking.
Heal the sick, Lord, according to Your will. Where You grant recovery, let there be thanksgiving. Where You grant endurance, let there be grace. Where You call someone home, let there be a peaceful passing and the sure hope of resurrection.
We entrust them all to You. Amen.
Blessing
May Christ, who healed the sick by His touch, bring comfort to all who suffer and strength to all who serve them.

Frequently asked questions
Who should I include in a prayer for the sick?
Begin with the people you know by name, then widen the circle: the chronically ill, the dying, and those who have no one praying for them. The prayer above follows that pattern.
Why pray for caregivers and medical staff as well?
Because healing is a shared work. Medical workers and family caregivers carry heavy burdens, and the sick are served better when those caring for them are supported in prayer.
