Morning prayer

A Tuesday morning prayer for strength and service

Thanks for a new day, and the offering of our work and relationships to God

Before the day gathers speed, pause for a moment of quiet. Pray these words slowly, placing your work, your loved ones and your worries into God’s hands.

Faithful God, thank you for this new morning and for the breath that woke me. Before the messages and the to-do list crowd in, I turn to you on this Tuesday in Ordinary Time and place the whole day in your hands.

I offer you my work: the tasks I look forward to and the ones I have been putting off. I offer you the people I will meet, my family at the breakfast table, my colleagues, my neighbours, the stranger at the checkout. Let me remember the words of your Son: “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40). Help me to recognise him in the tired, the lonely and the overlooked.

Today the Church remembers Saint Martin de Porres, the Dominican brother of Lima who cared tenderly for the sick and the poor. Give me something of his humility, so that small kindnesses, a meal shared, a call returned, a moment of patient listening, become my offering to you.

On this day dedicated to the holy angels, Lord, send your angels to guard me and those I love wherever we go. Steady me when worries rise, and give me strength for whatever the hours bring.

In this month of November, I commend to your mercy all who have died, especially those I miss. Grant them rest and light, and keep us united in the communion of saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord bless the work of your hands and the people you meet today. May his angels keep watch over you, and may the humble love of Saint Martin de Porres inspire every kindness you show.

Midday prayer

A Tuesday midday prayer for patience and purpose

A pause at noon to renew purpose, grow in patience and trust God's providence

Set your work aside for a few quiet minutes. Breathe, and let this midday prayer gather up the morning and offer the afternoon to God.

Lord God, here in the middle of this Tuesday I set down my work and turn to you. The morning has already asked much of me: tasks half finished, messages waiting, plans that did not go as I hoped. Thank you for the strength that has carried me this far.

Renew the purpose with which I began the day. In these green weeks of Ordinary Time you meet me in ordinary places: the desk, the kitchen, the shop floor, the car. Help me to do the next small thing well, with a quiet heart.

Give me patience with the people I will meet this afternoon: the colleague who interrupts, the child who tests me, the customer who is short with me, the neighbour who needs more time than I think I have. Your Son said, "Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40). Let me recognise him in each face. Saint Martin de Porres, humble Dominican brother of Lima who served the sick and the poor, teach me to give without counting the cost.

On this day dedicated to the holy angels, may my guardian angel keep me steady and alert to your providence. I place my worries in your hands, trusting that you see what I cannot.

In this month of remembrance, I bring before you the faithful departed, especially those I miss today; grant them rest and light. Keep me faithful until evening, and to the end of my days. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord steady your hands and soften your heart for the hours ahead. May his angels walk beside you, and may you find Christ in everyone you serve this afternoon.

Evening prayer

An evening prayer of thanks, mercy and rest

Asking God for a grateful heart, a clean conscience and peaceful sleep

As this Tuesday draws to a close, take a quiet moment to thank God, look honestly at your day and rest in his care. Pray these words slowly, pausing wherever your heart wants to linger.

Lord God, the light is fading on this Tuesday, and I come to rest in your presence. Thank you for the gifts of this day: for work that gave it shape, for the people who shared my table, for small mercies I hardly noticed until now. Every good thing came from your open hand.

Shine your light on the hours that have passed. Where was I patient, and where was I quick to judge? Whom did I overlook? Your Son tells us, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matthew 25:40). Forgive me for the times I passed Christ by in a tired colleague, a lonely neighbour, or someone at home who needed a kind word.

Today the Church remembers Saint Martin de Porres, the humble Dominican brother of Lima who served the sick and the poor with tireless love. Through his prayers, teach me to see you in everyone I meet. As I ask your pardon, give me the grace to forgive those who have hurt me, letting go of resentment before I sleep.

In this month of November, I entrust to you the faithful departed, especially those I have loved and lost. Grant them eternal rest in your light.

Now I place my worries in your hands: my family, my work, the unfinished tasks of tomorrow. Send your holy angels to watch over this home through the night, and let me sleep in your peace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing

May the Lord who walked with you today keep watch over you tonight. May his holy angels guard your rest, and may you wake tomorrow with a heart ready to serve him in the least of his brothers and sisters.
