Friday morning prayer at the foot of the cross

Offering the week's last work and asking mercy for the whole world

Morning Prayer editorial team ยท Updated: November 2026

Friday is the day Jesus died for us, and the Church keeps it as a day of remembrance and small sacrifice. This Friday morning prayer begins the day at the foot of the cross, offers the week's final stretch of work, and asks for mercy on the whole world.

Let us pray

Lord Jesus, it is Friday, the day You stretched out Your arms on the cross for me. Before I think about the weekend, let me stop at Calvary for a moment. Thank You. I will never fully understand what it cost You, but I do not want to forget it.

Today I offer You the last hours of this week's work. I am tired; my patience is thin; the people around me are tired too. Let my weariness be joined to Yours on the road to Golgotha, and let it become a prayer. Give me the strength to finish well, not just to finish.

In honor of Your Passion, I will give something up today: a meal, a comfort, a complaint. It is a small thing, but You accepted small things, a widow's coins, a boy's loaves. Accept mine, and use it for someone who is suffering more than I am.

Have mercy on the whole world this Friday. On the dying, who are closest to Your hour. On the sick in pain. On those who are betrayed, abandoned, falsely accused, as You were. On those who do not know that You died for them. On my own family and friends, whom I name now in my heart.

Mary, you stood beneath the cross and did not run. Stand beside me today. And when three o'clock comes, remind me to stop, even for a breath, and look at the One who loved me to the end. Amen.

Blessing

May the cross of Christ be your strength this Friday, and may His mercy, poured out for the whole world, rest on you and yours.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Friday special for Catholics?

Jesus died on a Friday, so every Friday is a weekly remembrance of Good Friday. The Church asks Catholics to do some act of penance on Fridays, and devotions such as the Stations of the Cross and the Sacred Heart are tied to this day.

Do Catholics still have to abstain from meat on Fridays?

During Lent, yes, for everyone aged 14 and over. Outside Lent, bishops in many countries, including the United States, allow another form of penance to be substituted, though abstaining from meat remains the traditional and recommended practice.

What is special about three o'clock on Friday?

It is the hour Jesus died. Many Catholics pause at 3 p.m. on Fridays, or every day, for a brief prayer, and devotion to the Divine Mercy calls it the Hour of Great Mercy.
